Physical Education activity: differences and similarities

There is no doubt that Physical Education (PE) plays an important role in the life of teenagers. It encourages pupils to learn about their bodies and it promotes health. Of course there are differences and similarities of PE in european schools. How often do pupils have PE courses? Which kinds of sports are taught? Do pupils enjoy their PE lessons? We started this activity to share information and discover new potentials in PE.

The following teachers worked together with their students for this activity:

  • Vassilis Palazis from the 3rd Gymnasium of Mytilene, Mytilene, Greece
  • Alexandros Lazaridis from the 2nd Model – Experimental Secondary School of Athens, Athens, Greece
  • Elena Kulbokiene from the Plunge Academic Adolfas Jucys Basic school, Plunge, Lithuania
  • Sandra Purmale from the Drabeši Boarding School, Latvia
  • Monika Ruwe from the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium, Münster, Germany
  • Carla Alves from EScola Básica Integrada de Fragoso – Barcelos, Portugal (as a visitor)

We started this activity by gathering information about PE in different schools. First we created an online padlet wall about PE and then we developed an online survey  to collect more details. The answers of this survey, sorted by country, can be found in this online table.

At a later stage, pupils talked to each other using email and skype (mainly). Several 1-1 online meetings were organized between schools. Pupils talked about their hobbies, their favourite physical activities and PE. Pupils then highlighted the basic differences and similarities about PE in different schools.

In parallel with this activity, three interesting videos were produced: Active lifestyles from the 2nd Model Experimental Junior High School of AthensSporty creative day – Drabeši Boarding School and Physical activity in our school – Lithuania. Pupils from all schools shared the videos and had a chance to observe different physical activities.

Here are a few results that came out from this activity:

  • In most schools, PE lessons take place twice a week.
  • In some countries (Lithuania, Latvia) a PE kit is not required.
  • Most students enjoy their PE lessons.
  • For best results, PE must be combined with proper nutrition.
  • Water sports and summer sports are more popular in Greece.

As a follow-up activity, we decided to create a common questionnaire about the physical activity of our students. We plan to organize the questionnaire and analyze the results by the end of this year.

Congatulations to all the teachers and students who participated in this activity! It was very creative!
